You need to file a Self Assessment return if you're self-employed, a company director, or if you earn income that isn't taxed at source — such as rental income, foreign income, or investment returns above certain thresholds. HMRC may also require a return if your income exceeds £100,000, or if you need to claim certain reliefs. The paper return deadline is 31 October following the end of the tax year. If you file online (which we always recommend), the deadline is 31 January. Your tax payment is also due on 31 January, with a second payment on account due by 31 July. Missing these deadlines results in automatic penalties, so early preparation is always worthwhile.

You can claim any expenses incurred wholly and exclusively for business purposes — including accountancy fees, travel, equipment, software subscriptions, professional indemnity insurance, and a proportion of home office costs if you work from home.
